Musters: Archery Standards
The following are the standards by which a member of the Warriors Guild must qualify in order to be considered an archer. There are two levels of archers, the levels are determined by accuracy.
Equipment StandardsBow- Long bow or recurve only (no sites, mechanical release, or kisser buttons) Nok sets are allowed. For adults must be at least 25# @ 28" but no more than 100# @ 28". For children 15 and younger n lower limit in poundage. Can be made of any material wooden or a wooden composite is preferred. Arrows- must be spined to your bow. Must be crested (a definition follows). The preferred material is wood, but fiber glass and aluminum are acceptable. Field tips or target tips only no broad heads. Quivers- Back belt or ground only (no bow quivers). Leather is better. Bow strings- Can be made of any material (but make sure that is durable and your bow is designed to take it. For example most Long bows are fine with Dakron or Kevlar but are not designed to take Fast Flight) Arm guards- any. Leather is better but the modern ones are good too. Must be worn at all times when shooting. For safety, trust me you will not like what could happen to your arm (ouch). Shooting gloves or Tabs- Any material is acceptable. These make the release go a lot smoother so your arrow flies more truly. Fletching (the Feathers on the arrow)- May be plastic Vanes but Feathers are better. The Feathers are more forgiving in flight and will "fold" over your hand or shooting shelf creating a better flight. Cresting- All archers will have an individual arrow crest-, which is a series of thick and thin bands painted on the shaft of the arrow near the fletching. Our crests must be at least 2 colors but no more than 4 consisting of at least 12 bands but no more than 20. Archer QualificationsKnowledge- must know the anatomy of a bow and of an arrow. 25 yard target- 4 rounds of 6 arrows will be shot into a 22" 10 point target face in a straight line and level shot. Must score at least 100 points. Perfect score is 240. 50-yard qualification- must hit a man-sized target with 4 of 8 shots in a straight line, level shot. Firing amid distractions- must hit a 16" Target face from 30 yards 4 of 10 shots in a straight-line level shot. The distraction will be different for everyone. Advanced Archer QualificationKnowledge- must know how to "tune" (set a nok point measure brace height and serve) your own bow. Must make your own bowstring. (Either Flemish Braid or Continual Loop are permitted.) 25 yard Target- 4 rounds of 6 arrows in a straight line level shot. Minimum score of 200. Perfect score of 240. 50-yard qualification- At a man-sized target must hit 8 of 10 shots in any target zone on a man shaped target face. Straight-line level shot. Amid distraction- must hit a 22" target face from 45yards 7 of 10 shots. Straight-line level shot. Archery Links
